I get so many clients that phone me and say, Brian please help, I got this company to design a shopping cart for me, but it does not work properly, the delivery cost is not correct, orders are missing etc.

Very important to remember - if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

Especially in SA, users are still very concerned when entering their credit card data on the internet, that if your functionality of your shopping cart is not working 100%, you have lost credibility and you have failed even before you have started.

I've seen some Online Shops in SA that looks as if they are going to steal my money or that the order will go missing with no proof of purchase. Your online shop should look inviting and credible if you want it to generate sales.

There is also no use that a shop functions perfectly, but it does not look credible.

2. The Payment Gateway

This is the company that will process your credit card payments.

With some Payment Gateways you are required to have a merchant account with your bank.

(a Merchant Account is a special account, that is approved by Mastercard & Visa, for you to accept credit card payments) Not only do these Payment Gateways charge you a monthly fee, but even the bank charges you a % on the value of your transactions, which is usually around 5%. Applying for a merchant account can take up to 6 weeks.

With other payment gateways, you don't require a merchant account from your bank and you don't pay a monthly fee, they just charge you a % on your transaction value.

Since 26 March 2010, Paypal has become available in South Africa to accept credit card payments. Paypal is the most well known and credible payment gateway in the world and I will certainly recommend them!

Very important!!! Please ensure that when you request a quote from any other service provider, that all costs are discussed in detail. I so often find that other service providers do not mention all costs involved of setting up your e-commerce site and you are left with a hefty list of hidden fees.
